: Hello I have a masters degree in Electrical engineering and a BS in Mechanical engineering. I have invented something very, very useful that no one has ever thought of before. I have reasearched this on my own and I feel that getting a patent on my invention would be a grand slam success!!!

: I have a problem though. I would like to hire a patent attorney ASAP!. But I am confused about patent law. What I need to know is wether or not I need to build a working model of the invention before I apply for a patent? The problem is that I can easily design and build my invention in my head and on paper, but it would probably take several months for me to be able to build an actual physical working model of the invention. This is because I will need to have special parts machined, and a specific circuit board developed.

: Also, I plan to travel to Europe in a few months, and I would like to file my application this month if I can. Does the patent office usually expect a working model? If so, I can send one in about 5 months from now, if my application is filed this month.

Dear Mr. Galois,
You do not have to make a working model. What you have conceived must just work.

Just filing a patent application will set a date but does not guarantee that broad claims my be obtainable.

Filing will also set up Treaty Piority for international right.

I don't want to discourage any creative person but want to start with caution, not timidity. A start might be going over what you have started with in a Reality Check®. Patents are expensive and JUST getting a patent may be an expensive waste of time, money and worry.
