: : I am constantly being told that i have to go through a : : lawyer to do a patent search. I am from Canada and am : : being directed to Ottawa (which is 4 hours away). Do i : : need to patent? Could someone direct me to information : : that would assist this venture. If you want to patent in Canada it is a good idea to have a Canadian patent search. A US search may be effective for Canada with some minor risk. There is great risk not using a lawyer. You have to find one you trust. You do not have to go to Ottowa. The attorney or professional searcher can best do the searching there. Doing it yourself is usually a waste unless you have professsional insight. I can recommend a lawyer in Ottowa that I trust. In the US there is a $100,000,000 a year scam preying on unwary inventors. Even legitimate lawyers can get patents for you that won't sell. M.
