What do you think of my prospects?[ Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Patent Forum ] [ FAQ ] Posted by Buck Carson on February 22, 2003 at 23:49:01:
I am studying for the Oct. 2003 patent bar exam. My ultimate objective is not to become a patent agent, but rather to start a company that can help smaller companies understand the patent process, teach the invention process to potential inventors, perform infringement detection services and to help implement patent strategies. Being able to represent inventors to the PTO is a start. I have 43 patents in two technology areas. I have gotten to the point where I write and prosecute my own patents. My attorneys simply review and make administrative suggestions. I have also been a key player in IP licensing, strategy policy making and rendering technical opinions regarding "freedom to use". Currently I make $129K, not including bonus, or benefits as a senior scientist at a Fortune 50 company. I could survive for two years making less than this salary. QUESTIONS: 1)I get scared when I see attorneys so concerned about what law school they went to. Apparently transcripts and Law School prestige are a major way of measuring an individuals performance. This suggests to me that performance metrics are not readily known or practiced in the IP business. After, 10-20 years practicing law, why would people/employers still be concerned about these issues? 2) If I were to have three employees, an engineer, an MBA, a secretary, five IP service contracts at 120K per year, how hard would it be to hire a full time patent attorney for say $150K/year? 3) Where can I find information on patent agent's and attorneys income? I already know some make <70K and some make >500k. What are the real means and averages? 4)What do you think of my prospects? Thank you, Buck
