A disclosure document can work as protection in the US only because the US is on a first to invent system and is used in an intereference. However, two issues wih DD:

1) it does nothing to protect your foreign rights.
2) It cannot serve as prior art.
3) Make sure a non-provisional or your PPA refers to the DD or it gets tossed after two years.

If one files a provisional application, make very sure good claims exist or else the PPA cannot be relied upon as a priority document if filing foreign (e.g. in the JPO).
