Patent Agent -- career?

Hi, I have BS and Masters Degrees in Biomedical Engineering (EE emphasis - not biotech so much). Worked in the field for 3 years, then switched into Software Engineering/Development for the past 5. Recently laid off. I'm strongly considering taking the Patent Bar exam. A few questions:

1) Can one with the above background make >= $70k right off the bat and sustain this (ideally increasing salary with experience) as merely a Patent Agent with no law degree? (ie are chances good that I can build a career around practicing Patent Law as a Patent Agent?)

2) Do law firms/companies hire Patent Agents and put them through law school?

3) What kind of job prospects are there in the Boston area for a newly-crowned Patent Agent with the above background?

Thanks!
