To see if your idea is already patented in the US just go to www.uspto.gov and learn to use the search system.

Filing a provisional patent ($80) can be done over the internet. Just READ carefully all the steps you must follow at www.uspto.gov. It will take at least 3 months for you to get all set up with your digital signature, etc.

But your provisional patent is of no use in establishing an early invention date if it is just documenting a 'concept'. The provisional patent must disclose all the key information that is eventually used in your full patent or you lose the early invention date.
