There are two US datebases on the net that I know of. There is a US database and an IBM dateabase. These don't go back beyond 1971 or so. They give a good idea about the state of the art but without the whole view there minght be older patents which impinge on the are. The USPTO has about 50 public libraries about the country with fully acess to the pattent database. Using the library is still not quite as good as a professional search at the Patent Office where there is also more not patent data available for searching. Physically the USPTO is better set up for patent searching. I frankly use as professional searcher going into the USPTO to do my searching.
