Dear Lynne deLeo,
What you are probably referring to are patent annuities. If the patent is of value it can be kept by paying the three annuities during its lifetime. You can pay them youself by checking with the USPTO. The still can be several hundred dollars.

We don't even recommed filing patent applications even if we know we can get patents unless the invention with a patent appears to have prospects. That is the start the Reality Check®.
