Dear Deb,
The cost of getting patent is not the issue. The issue is what can be done with your idea. It may not be protectable even with a patent. A patent with a legitimate patent lawyer or a scam artist will cost several thousand dollars. Just havin the patent is far from a guarantee that you can make money with your idea.

Sometimes there may be ways of making money even without a patent.
