: : : I am considering pursuing a job as a biotech patent examiner at the USPTO. Can anyone tell me what opportunities will exist for me with this training and experience if I decide I don't want to live in Virginia my whole life? Thanks

: : I'm not hiring but I think you are on the right track. Once you get admitted you can use it nationally. Your talent is really saleable with a law degree too.

: Dear Mr. Auslander,

: Just for clarification, without a law degree I would be able to make a move back into private industry as a patent agent after serving as a government patent examiner? Is this a common/facile transition for government patent examiners? Thanks

: Matt Murray

I am one of those very common former Patent Examiners now registered Patent Agent without law degree who is transitioning to private industry outside No. Virginia. It is common to some degree, but without law degree my location choices are more limited and its taking more time. There is one big reason for leaving No. VA.

As the USPTO filing and searching becomes more automated and available on the web, telecommuting in patent procesecution is more possible and available, but goverment progress is slow and is necessary because of security concerns.

Though I did not go for law degree, I feel more capable than some attorney-engineer-agents, because while at the PTO I used free time to keep up with new technology and improved my engineering skills instead. Thus while I know patent law and procedures inside and out from a different perspective, I can communicate more efficiently with inventors.
