Re: top 50 school or top 5 IP school?[ Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Patent Forum ] [ FAQ ] Posted by Dave on October 24, 2001 at 08:13:08: In Reply to: top 50 school or top 5 IP school? posted by mc on October 23, 2001 at 11:29:20: Mr. Auslander gave the best advice. Secondary considerations should be on potential career shifts. For example, you may work in a corporation for several years, then decide to work at a law firm. This may cause a dilemma. As background, law firms usually sell themselves on the credentials, i.e. schools attended, of their people. Their competence is supposed to be inferred from their credentials. However, the reality is that credentials and competence don’t correspond well. So there’s the dilemma: Do you go to a top school or do you go to a top IP school? Attending a top school that is also a top IP school is most desirable. If you can’t do that, then you have a choice that may come into play down your career path. For what this is worth, most corporate IP attorneys recognize that the average IP attorney in a law firm is barely competent. My advice is learn IP law the best you can, where ever you can. If you can get into the door, competence will definitely take you far. Good luck.
