: In the case of joint ownership of a patent, are each of the co-owners free to grant licenses to third parties without obtaining the prior permission of the other co-owner? Must the co-owner who granted the license pay back to the other co-owner part of the royalties received from the license party? Please email the answer if you know it! Thanks

Theoretically, each joint inventor has the right to independently
license, market, and develop the patent. Of course, as a practical
matter, if the joint inventors do this, then they also diminish
the value of the patent moneywise; they either end up competing
each other and losing the exclusivity granted by the patent, or else
they license to third parties with the same result and the license
doesn't bring in as much royalty.
