How to..[ Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Patent Forum ] [ FAQ ] Posted by Kimberly on August 22, 2001 at 00:34:29: I have had an idea running amuck in my mind for quite sometime now and am beginning to believe the advice my father gave me which is "the only difference between an ordinary person and a genius is when an ordinary person has an idea, they say "oh that's a good idea" and then wait for someone else to invent it. A genius on the other hand will say, "oh that's a good idea, how do I do it" and then follow through". I am unsure of the market for this particular product, and I am unsure exactly how it will work other than I know it WILL work. In order to get a patent on an idea does the idea have to be materialized (meaning, do I have to create one of whatever I am trying to patent?). I am totally unfamiliar with the field that would need to create it and wouldn't be able to create the prototype myself. My next question is is it possible to sell the "idea" itself to a larger company with an exsisting line of products that relate to this idea? Or would it even be monetarily intelligent to do so? (If I sell my idea for 2 million dollars and can make 10 million myself .. it's not so smart to sell the idea I say.) Anyway, any guidance would be appreciated.
