The "Patent Page" in this forum, as I recollect leads to an on line database on patents back to abour 1970. This usually is not complete enough for a patent search but it will give a good idea about what's out there.
I once had a disclosure on a control system for an electric motor. I was shocked to find that it was anticipated by a patent issured in 1869.
