Melane, With you background you can practice as a patent agent once you successfully pass the patent bar exam. Admission to the PTO Patent Bar is necessary before one can prosecute patent applications. I am a patent examiner at the uspto.gov (US patent and trademark office). However, if you want to practice as a patent attorney you will need to go to law school. Note, the patent office (www.uspto.gov) is always looking for good people. Go to their site and look up job opportunities, you can even apply on-line. They have a nice program as well -- can you think of a better place to learn and get paid about the patent law area. They will also pay for law school at night once you have worked 2 years with the office. Afterwards you are required to work 1 mth for every 3 credit hours paid for by PTO. But after 4 years with the office, the patent bar is automatically waived. You will have learned by trial by fire, i.e., no need to take this grueling 6 hr. exam that has only a 35% pass rate. Hope this helps.
