Filing a provisional application can cost as little as $75 in official fees and several hundred in preparation up front (but will need more money within a year). But for advanced technology, where I expect lots of competitors and challenges in the future, applications can cost up to $20,000 for the initial filing, and costs of up to $30,000 to get the patent issued.

Clearly this is a very wide range, and most applications fall somewhere in between. Many patent attorneys will give you a free (confidential) initial consultation, so it's worth it to ask a few for estimates based on a preliminary discussion of the invention.

Naturally, covering more bases will cost more money. But a good attorney will provide a variety of structured options so that you can get the best protection available for your particular economic situation.
