: It sounds like you have two separate issues to deal with.

: First, like most engineers and people with science backgrounds, you probably think and write like a scientist: hard facts, clear rules and definite answers. As you've figured out by now, the same skills that make you a good engineer are now working against you in law school. Doing well on law school exams requires a different way of writing exams. It's fair to say you need to learn to wallow in the ambiguity of the facts and the law, and to love doing it. The professors want to see you squirm and fret on paper.

: So I'd say, you need to recognize that this is a serious problem, but a problem that has a solution. Make an extra effort to get exam-writing help from your school, whether it's from the professors or tutors or 3Ls. You may need a paid exam-writing class.

: But you need to learn the internal logic of law school exam writing. Once you get it, you'll know. And then you'll be able to take exams able to show off your true level of understanding of torts or contracts, rather than have your science background undermining your performance.

: I wish every law school had a program just for science folks, where they took them in a room and slapped them a few times to get their attention and to make them realize that a completely different set of rules are in play. I could have used it.

: Second, damn I'm out of time. Gotta work.

Mr. Ericson and Mr. Auslander,

Thank you for the responses. My heart is what sent me to law school to begin with, so I think I'll continue to follow it.

I'm all about the tutoring idea. I think what you pointed out is certainly the trouble spot. Point well made. I'd like to hear your "Second" when you have time.
Thanks,
Norm
