Dear Katherine M,

You don't have to see the lawyer, but it would be wise to find a Registered Patent lawyer that you can trust.

Since patents are national and are filed in the Patent Office in Virginia you are not restricted to finding a lawyer in Michigan.

What is more your idea may not be patentable but still have value to you. We handle matters such as this from all over the world.
