: How do I know if a patent attorney is reputable? Does anybody know of any good ones in Delaware? Dear Ryan, You are just as much out in the cold as to what you get with patent lawyers as you are with any other lawyer. Even checking with the a Bar Association or with the Patent and Trademark Office to see if the attorney is in good standing is really not enough. If you get a recommendation from a client then there is a better chance of getting the right one. You have to use your gut feeling if you are operating cold, after you have checked particularly with patents since they are expensive even with an inexperienced patent pracitioner. Patent Law is national so you can use a patent lawyer in any state. Not every invention is patentable and not every patent give the protection the inventor needs. The Patent Office has a Roster of Attorneys. You may even be able to get to it on line by clicking on the Patent Page of this Forum. We start with a Reality Check (sm) to help save time, money and worry. We do not even recommend patent searches even if we believe that we can get a patent unless we and the client are convinced that the over all risk is appropriate. M. Arthur Auslander
