Ideas can be patented only when the idea itself,
once described, can be reduced to practice by
one of ordinary skill in the art. For U.S. patent
forms and fees and even some guidance for
inventors, see the U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office website, located at www.uspto.gov.

Also, speaking with a licensed lawyer will NOT
breach any confidentiality of the idea. Another
way to disclose the idea yet maintain
confidentiality is to use a Confidentiality
Agreement. Of course, there still is some degree
of risk when disclosing an idea to a third party.
