The Assistant General Counsel – Intellectual Property (IP) at Synaptics will report to the General Counsel and manage a global team of patent practitioners and professionals. The Assistant General Counsel – IP will have a wide breadth of responsibilities involving all types of IP including patents, trade secrets, trademarks, and copyrights.
•Manage and grow the company’s global IP portfolios (with a special focus on patents), including directing patent preparation and prosecution activities;
•Lead all aspects of the IP function, including defining best practices, processes, and metrics; managing and training the in-house IP team; and selecting and overseeing outside IP counsel;
•Counsel senior executives, business units, and technical functions on patentability/registrability, validity, infringement, misappropriation, IP litigation, IP agreement provisions, open source, standards, and clearance to practice as related to Synaptics and others’ IP and products;
•Define IP strategy and ensure alignment with Synaptics’ corporate vision and business plans; and
•Lead or support activities associated with strategic patent acquisitions, IP licensing or sales, M&A due diligence and integration, joint development, and IP assertions and litigation.
•Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
•Engineering or science undergraduate degree. EE/CS or similar area of study, graduate technical degree, and prior work in the high tech industry preferred.
•Registered with the USPTO. Member of California Bar or eligibility for California registered in-house counsel status.
•At least eight years of IP experience, including experience with patent preparation & prosecution, licensing, litigation and portfolio management. Mixture of law firm and in-house experience preferred.
•Familiarity with managing teams and outside counsel on a global scale.
•Exceptional oral and written communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills.
•Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment involving a multitude of simultaneous, different projects with cross-functional teams and stakeholders at all levels of the company.
•Japanese or Mandarin language skills are not required but will be given special consideration.
