Effective Patent Strategy

I am putting together a presentation for someone (confidential) and need a sample case study of a medium sized software company (500 employees, 100-200 million revenue) that went from being a small venture to its current size through the implementation of an effective patent strategy OR a sample case study of a medium sized company that grew into something much bigger again through the use of an effective patent strategy.  Does anyone have any examples in mind? Please note, that when I speak of an effective patent strategy I am not necessarily speaking of licensing patented inventions.  It could just be the use of patents as effective marketing tools or use of patents to defend a competitive advantage

I'd suggest looking at VXtreme Inc. (bought by MSFT in 97).  You might also research Tumbelweed Corporation (known for a very aggressive patent strategy), Scientific Learning, and PocketThis (now PhoneSpots).  I think they're all in the size you're looking for, had a prominant role for patents in their business plans, and are still around after the dot-gone flush.

Regards.

Thanks for the Input.  Can you recommend any books on Implementing Patent Strategies that include good case studies relevant to the software industry?

I have two, but I haven't yet read either of them.

One is "Patent or Perish" by Eric Stasik -- a frequent poster here a while back.  My apologies for not having read the book yet.  He was kind enough to send me a free copy.

Another is "Rembrandts in the Attic".  Don't remember the author, but I'm sure she'll pop right up in Amazon.com.  (Incidentally, I studied law in Berkeley, so every pronoun referring to a person of unknown gender is a female -- except when it comes to divorce cases/hypotheticals in which the person with all the money and no custody is male and always qualified with "deadbeat" and a snear).

I have no idea whether those books follow illustrative company histories/experiences, but I'd expect that they do.

Regards.
