Invention w/o company resources

If I've developed an invention on my own time, without company resources, for a device which is in somewhat of the general feild of my employer, do I need to get any soft of IP release?

Check your employment contract.  That probably has your answer.  
 
If it doesn't, it gets fuzzy and likely includes state law issues of contract.
