I am 21 in college, think I have a good invention

Okay so I am in college right now and I have been pondering on this invention for sometime now. I really have no idea of what to do from this point out. Now if I obtain a patent, does it just patent my idea at the time? Does this mean variations of my idea will be allowed? I do not really understand how to make my idea into reality. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

It all depends on what the claims say. You try to craft claims that cover your specific embodiment and all feasible variations that are still novel and non-obvious. So, fairly broad coverage of the general idea of your invention can often be captured in the claims.

If there is a copy of "Patent It Yourself" by David Pressman in your university library, I'd recommend checking it out.

While there are some good invention promotion companies (I know nothing about the firm cited), be careful, because some are unscrupulous. Look here, too. There are other pages within the USPTO website that can help you choose a company that's right for you.
