Is it ok to show your idea to the general public after you have applied for a patent or should you wait until you receive a patent to show it ?

During the pendancy of the application, trade secret protection may still be in effect.
 
Publicly showing your inveniton during pendancy won't affect the evaluation of your patent application, but would jeopardize trade secret protection.  If that's important to you, think carefully (or see an attorney) prior to making any public disclosures.
