Search strategies often vary from company to company, person to person and often differ in their final output. Going by my personal experience search strategy is often dependent on the subject of search, and usually strategized considering technological area and level of technical disclosure. I would recommend that before zeroing down to any search firm do ask about their search methodology and strategy. In nut shell, searching is more a personal skill rather than firm’s in-house strategy!

| Search strategy should be dependent on the subject of any patent search - it should differ from search to search moreso than firm to firm, person to person, etc. Some searches, you can narrow down to maybe three subclasses, search those subclasses, and have yourself a completely thorough search. Other searches, you couldn't even narrow down potentially relevant subclasses to fifty, and attempting to do a traditional classification-based search will be a waste of time just about. Most searches - across multiple industries/fields - fall somewhere in between. Of course things get a little more complicated when you take non-patent prior art searching into account.

I do agree that search strategy is more dependent on the subject of any patent search and also differ from search to search. Identifying potentially relevant sub-classes is half the way done. But still searching relevant patent citations/literatures is more a personal skill which often depends on the understanding level of searcher about the subject, essential elements to be searched, and ease with the patent laws, particularly in establishing criteria for benchmarking for obviousness, anticipation and motivation from subject to subject.

Try a few! Call any of the above companies and ask for a sample search. They can usually show you an overview of what they provide and give you pricing. For instance when I called Landon IP they quoted me within minutes and also customized the search to my needs so I stuck with them because it was the best value for my dollar once I compared the samples from other companies. Also research, outsourcing is big in this industry and anyone who outsources work usually lacks the quality we desire. This has become a big problem recently, so it's nice to be able to talk to those who are performing your search. Inquiry directly with the company to see if you will have access to the analyst team conducting your search. Good Luck! Bill
