i want to know how to check the legal status of the patent and also let me know the free data base to check the status of the patent.

There is some good stuff in Public PAIR for published applications:
http://www.uspto.gov/ebc/index.html  
 
Assignment and maintenance fee information is there.
 
INPADOC is a good source of additional legal status information for U.S. patent and patents in a large number of countries, but is not a free database.
