provisional - several inventions

can one provisional application include several unrelated inventions?  
 
i am not familiar with the process and the current book i am referencing mentioned this

Yes, and it's not uncommon.  If they're truly unrelated, they'll probably end up as separate non-provisionals, but claiming priority to the single provisional.
