Title: Need experience but dont want to go to USPTO
Post by E1Queens on Oct 1st, 2007, 10:12pm
Hello,

I am a new patent attorney who is desperately seeking a job but i dont want to go to the USPTO. Where else can a mechanical engineer with no IP experience who has passed her state bar and Patent bar go to get experience.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. for the right experience i am willing to move anywhere

I am not going to say it is your best bet, but Michigan probably has a larger than normal use for people with a ME backgrounds, due to the automotive industry, and all its support companies, which consist of a very high percentage of mechanical engineers. The auto industry is in a bit of a slump still though.

I would also suggest looking at issued patents and published applications for companies/firms that do mechanical work.  This way you can focus your resume submissions.

I don't know if this is kind of experience you would be looking for, but there are work-from-home patent searching positions available.  It is certainly a way to make a few dollars and get your foot  in the door.

I heard Patent Searching is hot right now.

The USPTO plans to outsource a lot of this work to private companies in the future and hiring should commence shortly if not already.

"Patent Searching is hot right now."

I'll take a cold shower. :)

The USPTO started contracting out PCT searches about a year ago:

The USPTO is pleased to announce that contracts in
 response to solicitation number DOC52PAPT0601014
were awarded on September 7, 2006 as follows:

DOC50PAPT0601025 was awarded to  Landon IP,
Inc., 1700 Diagonal Rd., Suite 450, Alexandria VA
 22314.
DOC50PAPT0601026  was awarded to Cardinal Law
Group LTD., 1603 Orrington Ave., Suite 2000,
 Evanston IL 60201.
