Title: Is it ok to send resume on-line?
Post by Amitkumar Dharia on Jun 1st, 2007, 10:52am
I am seeking a patent agent position in chemical/ mechanical/ polymer/ material /nanocomposites with a law firm in Dallas area.  I am a registered patent agent (April 2005) and a patentee with a very little direct experience in patent prosecution. Currently I run a R & D service business and can work only as an extern to learn the art and then make a full time career.  I have extensive industrial experience, strong aptitude for IP and advanced education (Ph.D., M.E., MBA).  I love reading patents and enjoy/understand wide technology areas. I have following questions:

(1) Is it okay to send resume "on-line" in response to on-line post or law firms prefer/expect mail?
(2) If my background is mainly industrial  with no direct patent prosecution experience, how should I outline strengths as a patent agent.  As an inventor, I have  interacted with law firms during all my 20 years in industry. I have drafted and successfully prosecuted one of my own patents.
(3) Most law firms want  full time employees.  Under my current situation, I can only work part time.  Further, I do not have a law degree.  Is this an accpetable practice?

Any advice?

Thanks.

(1) It is ok; however, I do not advise doing so.  Instead, spend the time/money to send the documents via express mail.

(2) Stress your ability to quickly learn new and complex technology.  Stress your ability to clearly and effectively write about such technology.

(3) This will cause you trouble.  The absence of a law degree is fine, but you need to be able to work full-time.

Good luck.

Having been on the hiring side at a big firm, I would say it is okay to send your resume on-line via e-mail.  Definately stress your quick ability to learn.

Good luck.
