Title: Salary Advice for Tech Advisor
Post by phil.gs on May 23rd, 2007, 4:14pm
I could use some advice about a job offer I recently received for an entry-level technical advisor position at a big law firm. The firm has a small patent group (less than a dozen attorneys and patent agents) and is located in Northern Virginia/DC area.

I'm completing a PhD in molecular biology, but I also have skills in IT/computer science. They're bringing me in to work with multiple "arts". I have no prior experience in patents, but I have been trying to make myself at least conversant. And I have a good LSAT score.

What's a fair salary for this position?

The firm doesn't have a tuition reimbursement program, but the offer includes a raise when I start law school as well as identical raises each year I'm in law school. This seems like a kind of strange way to work it--why not just divide the money evenly across all four years?--but I suspect they're trying to build an incentive into the program. Thoughts?

Finally, they're hasn't been any discussion of a signing bonus or relocation assistance. I'm moving from Texas with a wife and a newborn, so either would be a big help. Should I ask for either of these?

Thanks!

Fair salary?  70-85k sounds fair to me.  Don't undercut yourself.

Signing bonus/relocation assistance?  Can't hurt to ask.  If this really is a big firm, they probably pay these sort of things for the attorneys.  As a tech advisor, I would try to snag these as well.

Good luck.  Make sure this is what you really want to do before taking the plunge.
