Title: Is NAPP worth the membership fee?
Post by guest47 on Sep 10th, 2006, 10:33pm
I'm a fresh US patent agent looking for networking and job opportunities.  How good are NAPP's job resources?  I'm interested in joining but am reluctant to put yet more money into a career change I have yet to get anything out of!

Thanks!

Well, NAPP members are sure not represented here. Like you, I've been holding out on membership until the cost/benefit ratio becomes smaller (Yep, $200/0 at this stage, pretty big number!).

I too cringe at the $200 price tag.

By comparison, I am a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS).  Full ACS dues are $132.  ACS membership includes:
 # FREE Subscriptions to Chemical & Engineering News magazine and Chemistry
    online member-magazine.
 # Career Services: Career consultants, resume reviews, job listings, salary surveys Ö
 # Access to a Broad Range of Scientific and Technical Information  ...
 # Continuing Education & Professional Development ...
 # Personal Benefits: Insurance, travel, moving and financial programs ...

Iím not pushing anyone (especially non-chemists) to join the ACS.  My point is simply that other professional societies offer more services for less money.  Also some professional societies offer a reduced rate for the first year of membership to encourage people to try there services.  NAPP does not offer such a discount (neither does the ACS).

Having said that, I have nothing against the NAPP and perhaps some day I will join.

There have been discussions here about NAPP in the past.  From what's been posted here, the main benefit is that there are more prep and pros specialists there than here.  So, with an obscure problem, you may get several responses/points of view.  The quality here is very good, but the number is reportedly higher at NAPP.
I have a colleague who belongs and he feels it's worth it.

If one is considering the AIPLA or the NAPP, another thing to consider, if you are agent, is that the AIPLA charges an agent the same membership fee as an attorney but will not allow an agent to vote on issues offered up by the AIPLA.

It is rather lame.

Your local __IPLA association is probably a better bet if one wants to belong to some professional IP association other than the AIPLA or the NAPP.

I agree this is lame, and is one of the reasons why I haven't joined AIPLA.  At least NAPP lets agents vote.  Not being able to vote in AIPLA makes sense, but paying the same price as someone who can doesn't.

IEEE would be an applicable society to join for my current job (EE), but I have no idea whether they provide sufficient resources and networking for IP; my guess is they don't.

Thanks for the responses.
