Title: Malpractice Insurance
Post by bean on May 2nd, 2006, 7:34am
Assuming I work as a patent agent, where can I obtain malpractice insurance?  Does the pricing range by state, by experience, and by other factors?  Forgive my complete ignorance of the subject!

The easiest way to try and get malpractice insurance if you are an agent is to join NAPP and buy the insurance through their NAPP® Professional Liability Insurance Program.

See:

Also, serach for previous posting on this topic.  The question has been asked and answered before.

I found a good way to keep premiums low is to find two or three reputable agents and get competitive quotes every year.   A bit of a hassle, but you save about 30%.

Mark:

Ballpark, can you give an idea of what we're speaking of $$$ wise?

Is it $5K/yr for $150K protection?

I pay less than $5,000 for more than $150,000.  I'm in Ohio and go through a group that concentrates on OH lawyers.  Note that it depends upon the complexion of your practice.  E.g., litigation v. prep and pros.  Also, it goes up every year until about Year Six.
Finally, if you decide to leave the practice or go with a firm that has their own coverage and want to maintain coverage for your own "prior acts", you'll pay a "tail" of about one year's premium.

Thanks Bill.

A friend mentioned that one of the "must" was an automated docketing system. Do you use one? Which one?

My carrier just wanted to know if I use one.  My current one is done by hand.
