Title: uspto to pay my tuition?
Post by nquinn on Nov 18th, 2005, 10:00am
Does anyone have experience with the patent office paying their tuition for law school?

What other options are there?

I'd highly doubt it, especially if you do not work there already and have them completely impressed.

:-/ I did work as a Technical Specialist in a law firm in Northern Virginia.

There are many firms interested in people like you.  Most firms do have 100% tution reimbursement programs.  Some smaller or cheaper firms have partial tuition reimbursement or loan programs!

If you work as a Technical Specialist and go to law school at night, you will take four years to complete.  Although it gives good experience, its just gruelling, in my view! Think of billable hours...! You won't have balanced life style. I don't recommend this path.

If you go to law school full-time, you can complete in two and half years and  you will get the "graduation year" credit.  Lots of firms have STUPID associate class year system for your compensation and promotion.

If you do the math and figure out what you get out for your efforts, its probably better to go to law school fulltime.  Many lawyers don't respect long PTO experience! If you want to be a successful lawyer, you have to be a risk-taker.  Just quit PTO and go to law school.  I am sure you will find job after your law school.

GOOD LUCK!!

When I was there the PTO was reinstating its LS program.

1) USPTO will pay your tuition if you've worked there for 2 years.
2)They require you to keep working while attending, and require a year of commitment after LS for each year they pay your way. If you leave early, you gotta pay them back.

They are paying for mine (and about a 5 other people who go to my school) now.  Right now, the PTO is paying.  You have to work there for 1.5 years before they will pay.

When I was there POPA was complaining about the PTO bailing on the program in the past and sticking examiners unexpectedly with a large chunk of tuition to pay.   I was never sure how much of what POPA said that could be taken at face value.
