Title: PhD in cancer biol want to change to patent law
Post by itacofo on Jul 17th, 2005, 12:07pm
Hi,
I am doing my post-doctoral research in cancer biology and 'am in the US on a J1 visa (eventually I will be converting that to H1 visa). I am considering changing fields to patent law. Can I join a patent firm here in the US and give the patent bar exam? Does my visa status allow that? I plan to continue with my research for another two years and then change my field. So that gives me time to plan and prepare for the career change. How best can I use these two years and prepare myself for the change?

I think you might want to look for firms hiring technical specialists.  I would figure out where in the country you want to work and then just contact the firms.  Don't be afraid to e-mail some of the partners - if you have the background they need they will be very approachable.  If not, they will just toss your resume into the garbage can.  The visa will be an issue.  As for getting ready, patent law is much like an apprentance ship - a lot of on the job training.
