Topic: Getting out of the PTO (Read 5062 times) |

The PTO has been pretty good to me but I'm thinking that I may want to leave soon. I've worked there two years and started straight out of college so I have not much real world experience other than PTO.
I have a computer engineering degree and can do EE and/or computer programming and am very flexible in learning new things.
Assuming I don't go down the law or agent path, what are my options for getting out of the patent office? Given my current salary, I'd want at least $80k + insurance/401k to move. Is this realistic? I'm in the DC area, where I'd like to stay for the foreseeable future.

Yes.
This is not unlike the other questions where people are trying to decide between career X and patent law- I just have no career X.

So work as an engineer? That seems like the most logical choice. Granted, your two years at the PTO probably won't be considered relevant work experience, and that $80k salary may be a longshot at entry-level, even in DC.

How much does an entry level examiner at the PTO make? You've worked there two years, straight out of UG, and have managed to make around 80k, or is the 80k significantly higher than what you made at the PTO?
