Resume for Technology Specialist

Hello All,
Background- I am interested in starting off as a technology specialist at a law firm. I have done my phd in molecular and cell biology and have been postdocing for the past year in an autoimmune area (all in pretty good research institutes). I feel that a law firm will give me the right mix of pratical experience, along with which i can take the patent bar exam (correct me if I am wrong).

Questions-
1. I am going to start applying in the Boston area. But before that I want to know tips on how to prepare my resume/cv for the tech specialist position.
2. What are the key things law firms look for in a resume of a tech specialist? What do they wince on seeing?
3. How can I prepare an attractive cover letter?
4. any other pointers on resume or cover letter will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I'm in a similar position (PhD with a Tech Specialist position), so I wish I had easy answers to your questions. I'm not on the hiring side, so maybe that's why I don't have good advice. I would say that your resume and cover letter should both highlight the value you would bring to a law firm, namely your technical background. You should also try to paint a complete picture of yourself, especially with your resume, so be sure to include teaching experience, grants or fellowships you've earned, that kind of stuff.

I think the best thing you can do is to e-mail some IP lawyers in your area or Boston (not clear from your post if you currently live in Boston or not) and see if they would be willing to give you advice on your resume/cover letter and this career path in general.

Good luck!

Try to picture yourself as someone looking for a scientist or an engineer who can technically write your invention on behalf of you.

Who would you ask for the job?
1. At least you would expect someone to understand your invention well enough so that s/he can reasonably draft a patent application with little or no supervision.
