Drew83... Be Careful.

I was in your situation about 2 years ago. I wanted to go to U of I... i don't know how I didn't get in considering I had pretty good numbers.

So I deferred for a year from a tier 2 school, passed the Patent Bar, and just finished my first year at that T2 school. I know everyone thinks they'll be in the top 20% but 80% of the class obviously isn't. I'm in the middle. Not a bad place to be but it's no good if you want to go to a big firm from a T2 school. And even though we may have been great writing in engineering courses, the kids from liberal arts can write like no body's business.

My opinion, I didn't gain much from deferring or passing the Patent Bar. I know of kids who are getting by in interviews just telling the firm they're "interested in taking the Patent Bar." I say go to the BEST school you can get into and get the best 1L class rank you can. And even after that, there's no guarantee... it's a tough decision.

Thanks Isaac and lawstudent for your comments.

I think the real estate investment is having more of an impact on me to deferr, rather than the patent bar.  I wanted to find out if passing the patent bar would provide an added benefit for me deferring, however, it appears that it doesn't.

The tier 2 school in Chicago is the best school I got into.  If I deferr and find myself bored, I may just retake the lsat and see if I can get into a better school (note: my lsat score was not much higher than my diagnostic score).

The only major disadvantages I see to deferr, is waiting another year for the rigors of 1L and graduating a year later (age 27 rather than 26).

lawstudent:  being in the middle of a tier 2 (could be where I'll be), did you find it difficult to get a summer internship?

Thanks again!

Drew 83,
To tell you the truth, your 1st year grades don't really matter for the summer internship. You start applying to them in like December (well before you even get your 1st grade). The internships at the really prestigious law firms are really hard to get (you better have a good law school on your resume) the 1st summer. I got mine based on my undergrad school, law school rep and work exp. (grades were not a factor at all).
For the second summer IP Fair in August, I got interviews at some of the best IP firms but they want students in the "top 25% at top 20 lawschool." I didn't list that I was in the middle of the class when I applied... so the interviews could be a complete waste of time.
By the way, which T2 law school are you thinking about going to? I though about going to  Loyola or Kent but decided not to because they're ranked so low in Chicago and you have so much competition from the good law schools all over the country.

The law school I am considering is Depaul.  I know they have a strong IP program, however, I also know that overall ranking is what counts.

Good point about 1L internship and grades.  I think I should have a fair shot, if undergrad is valued (I graduated from a top 10 eng school).

So did you end up getting a 2L summer internship?

Drew83,
The interviews for next summer are in August, so no I don't have a 2L internship yet. All of the recruiting starts really fast.  The worst part you'll realize later, is that you can't even get an interview/call back at some top firms just because you aren't attending a top 15 law school.
DePaul is ok ... I've heard their local reputation has went down the drain the last few years. Hopefully it goes back up. The funny thing is, I hear Kent wasn't even top 100 a few years back. Now it's higher than Loyola. The rankings are all a scam in my opinion.
I went to top 10 engr program too.... sounds like its not that rare anymore. Best of luck.
