The USPTO census data

Is it relatively accurate? I just find it hard to believe that there are only 31,000 active patent lawyers/agents in the whole country as of 2005, which would mean something like 26,000 active IP lawyers.

It may not mean anything just seeing those numbers to some people, but there are over a million lawyers in the U.S., so 26,000 is only a bare 2.5%, and that doesn't even get into how many of them tend to mostly litigate or prosecute, the specializations and the other aspects of IP law.

The number was just a lot lower than I was expecting.

Passing rates seemed to be point to adding about 800-1,200 per year (last year it was 2,000). Given a 25 year career, sounds about right. Agree though, a lot lower than expected (not that one is complaining)
