Experience Necessary?

I have a BS EE degree (3.0 gpa) and have no engineering experience. Since graduation I have been workings as a market analyst for the industrial automation industry (3 yrs). I plan on passing the patent bar before staring law school this fall. Will my lack of engineering experience hurt my employment opportunities for patent law?

Does it make sense to go to law school with the intention of going into patent law without technical experience?

Do well in law school and you should not have a too much of a problem. As always, it primarily depends on the job market and timing when job searching.

Please don't get discouraged.  Your good standing and experience during law school years should/would/must build your confidence and expertise and land a job without trouble.  Just keep plugging!

I worked for UPS in the late 80's, among the first "specialists" hired into management without driving (as an hourly worker). The "myth" was that all managers had driven, then when you asked further, most managers you met had driven for 1 week to a month. The joke used to be, "Did you ever refuel the package car (they're not trucks!)?".

I betcha that if you go dig into the ranks for IP attorneys, the vast majority had little if any "real" experience as engineers. Yet the Patent system does well, thank you.

Keep on plugging!
