Para/LAssist-telecommute-what do you think?

Please let me know what you (as attorney's and patent agents) consider the pros and cons of a legal assistant position becoming a 70-100% telecommuting position in the future. Is it feasible? I am a legal assistant who thinks telecommuting could be feasible for highly skilled type of assistants due to EFS Web. I am a very self sufficient assistant who prepares all filings going to the PTO, except for substantive matters (even for R116/111 Amends and Briefs I still proofread my attorney's work thoroughly and correct mistakes). I also think it could be beneficial for the law firm because they could pay flat rates per project, rather than per hour (and risk losing money to lazy unmotivated assistants), they would not have to bother with benefits and a basic secretary with minimal typing skills could be hired to take care of anything "in house" such as specific client letters. Letters associated with any filing can be generated by the para who files with the PTO. I know there are cons, but it is almost 6am, and as I am preparing for work and saying goodbye to my 6 month old son, I am hopeful there is some kind of solution that can keep me at home while still earning a fairly respectable living.

With commutes increasing and more work being performed away from the office the trend is remoting. I see myself leaving the office enviornment entirely and meeting inventors on their turf, approximately 5 yrs from now. I am building expertise and a reputation. At that point I will be forced with replacing the patent paralegal help on which I now rely. You pose an interesting alternative to doing all the work myself. You are looking at the future for some.

I'm a patent agent working from home. My job mostly consists of conducting prior art searches for a law firm located 175 miles away. I've been working for the firm for 2 1/2 months and I've been in the office twice: once for my job interview and once to attend a seminar. Overall I like the job. For the past 30+ years I've worked for big companies. I enjoy not having to deal with office politics, commuting, and the hastles of getting to work at a particular time every morning. I get paid on a piecework basis. I've increased my production speed since starting with the firm, but I need to work faster yet. By the way, I am a regular employee and I do get regular benefits including health and dental. With use of the internet and telephone, I can get all the information, including performance feed-back I need. I definately do not miss the interpersonal stuff that goes on in the office. Good luck.
