Phd in Chemistry? Worth anything?

I have a Phd in organic chemistry and have been bounced around quite a bit in the last few years. Contraction and outsourcing have destroyed long term career prospects. I don't want to be 45 and replaced by some kid in China.

I've worked on some patent related projects and am considering preparing for the patent bar.

Is anyone aware of the prospects for patent agents with a background in chemistryHuh Huh

I'm a B.S. chemist and I was looking for a patent agent position.  I was focusing on the Minneapolis area, but there are few openings there.  If you're willing to look nationwide - as usual hot spots for chemists are the NY-NJ-PA and TX regions - you'd probably have better luck.

I'm guessing that a Ph.D. will help, also you are quite a bit younger than me.  On the other hand, I had some experience in the patent area and that probably worked to my advantage.

If you're seriously looking for a job, be prepared to make many phone calls, set up many informational (i.e. networking) meetings, and be willing to travel around the country for interviews.

Thanks! How many times did you interview prior to landing something?

Do you know what the hottest areas in the country are? I live in the northeast.

You might try the  NY-NJ-PA and TX regions.  Think about where there are chemical and pharmaceutical companies.  That may help guide you on this quest.
