Technology Specialist --Law firms

Hello,

I have several interviews set up with big law firms for technology specialist positions (biotechnology).  I have no idea what type of pay I should ask for if I am offered any of the jobs.  I will have a PhD in Immunology in December.  My undergraduate GPA was 3.98 and my graduate GPA is 3.81.  Also, I have a few research publications, but have no law experience.  My plan is to start out as a technology specialist in a big law firm and go to law school during the evenings to become a patent lawyer.  Could any technology specialists (or even patent attorneys) out there help me out and provide me the appropriate pay that I should request.  Thank you!

I am also a PhD (molecular physiology) with no law experience and am looking for technology specialist positions.  How did you identify appropriate firms to apply to? Any other advice in obtaining interviews?

Good luck with your job hunt!  Sorry I cannot provide an answer to your salary question.

Your insights are greatly appreciated

I would highly suggest you purchase the AIPLA report from their website.  It is an extremely comprehensive report on IP careers, salaries, benefits and adjusted for region.  It will cost like 35 bucks for non-members and is free to download for members.

Also check out salary dot com for biotechnology patent agent pay scales.

Hi Axl,

I went on-line to check out the law firms in the DC area that focus on intellectual property.  Then I began to contact several patent attorneys by both phone and e-mail asking them if I could do an informational interview with them merely to gather information on the career.  I did this only to get a real idea whether I wanted to move out of research and into this line of work.  In a few cases one thing led to another and I got an interview.  Hope this can help.
