What is it like as a patent lawyer

I have read several forums and topics about becoming a patent lawyer, and everyone seems entirely consumed with the amount of money vs hrs for patent lawyers.

I am completely unworried about being at a top law school or making top 10% at that law school. Currently, I have a 3.97 gpa at uiuc for electrical engineering after my third year.

I'm very interested by what I believe patent law is: trying to protect intellectual property in such a way that promotes technological growth through competition.

But I have absolutely no idea what a patent lawyer in a top firm would do for 80 hrs a week. Or what a normal patent lawyer would do for 40-50 hrs a week.

I would be very grateful if you could lead me to any place where I could learnnnn!!!

What makes you think patent lawyers at top firms work 80 hours a week and "normal" patent lawyers 40-50?  And, what's "normal"?
Anyway, I'd suggest you "shadow" both a top firm patent lawyer and a "normal" patent lawyer for a day and see what they do.
I've been bigfirm, in-house, and solo and they're all very different.  Not that any one is better than the other, just different.  Maybe if you had some specific questions, we could give you some specific answers.

Ahh.. the idealism is so refreshing!

Sue other people for infringing your client's patents.  Or threaten to sue them, so they will give your client money in a settlement.  Or protect your client from losing too much in a lawsuit.

Try to write up patents or prosecute them in a way so that your client doesn't get sued in a few years.  Even more importantly, try to do it in a way so that you or your firm doesn't get sued for malpractice in a few years.

Call up your favorite patent attorney and tell him you'll buy him lunch if he could answer a few burning questions you have.  Ask for his business card.  And tell him thanks for his time.
