Citizenship vs. patent agent in USA

Hello, I am going to get my PhD in biology in a year and considering the career options in IP field in USA.

I am not a permenant resident yet and I can't find out the citizenship requirment for patent agents in USA. Anybody give me a hint?

Also, how many years will the Patent Bar Exam result be valid?  i.e., is it OK that I take the exam now and apply job three years later?

Thanks for your attention.

Check out page 8 of the following requirements bulletin regarding non-US citizens taking the patent bar exam:

http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dcom/olia/oed/grb15nov05.pdf

It probably won't answer all your questions but that's the first place to start. Also search other threads on this site as this is a fairly frequent inquiry. I don't have any other knowledge to impart on this subject.

For those people that pass the patent bar exam and pay the final fees to obtain a registration number, it will have a lifetime validity, for now, as long as you don't violate professional conduct rules as defined by the patent office.

I say 'for now' because things can change. There was some rumblings for re-certification processes a few years back but they seemed to have died. Also, the patent office will occasionally poll the patent bar and remove those individuals that do not respond - basically records housekeeping.
