Interested in feedback about belonging to NPAA. I am a recently "minted" Patent Agent (not Atty). Looks like NPAA is "it" (AIPLA appears to be for lawyers only).

Interested in Pro/Cons, any possible downside? Is this like the IEEE and other engineering organizations? (i.e.  dominated by professors/professional association members, but pretty useless for practicing engineers?). Is it more than just a way to get some useful organizational discounts?

I think you mean NAPP.

NPAA appears to be a professional fisherman's (anglers) association.

I would not go so far as to call IEEE useless for practicing engineers.  They have a bunch of fabulous publications that can be extremely useful.

For patent agents in particular, NAPP can be an avenue for obtaining malpractice insurance which can be otherwise difficult to come by for non attorneys.

In late 2004, AIPLA amended its bylaws to allow patent agents to join as an affiliate.  However, you cannot vote or hold office in AIPLA.

You may want to check it out.

I wanted to express my satisfaction with NAPP.  I have been a member for 3 months and look forward to becoming more active in the org.

By the way, I'm also newly minted. (5 months)

I got an application (again) in the mail yesterday for AIPLA.  As a patent agent, I have no interest in paying the full membership dues just to be an affiliate.  Without further consideration, the application went into the recycle bin.
