Patent Bar ?

I am planning on starting law school in the Fall and hope to take the patent bar before I begin. My questions are numerous.

(1)  I am trying to register for the patent bar, but cannot figure out what registration fee is required? The Form PTO-158 states the following:

Enclosed is the non-refundable $40.00 application fee set forth in 37 CFR 1.21(a)(1)(i).
OR
Enclosed is the $1,600.00 fee set forth in 37 CFR 1.21(a)(10).

Can anyone advise what 37 CFR 1.21 is and where I can find it?? (I have tried searching on the USPTO website, but did not have much luck.)

(2) How much time is recommended for preparing?
(3) If I register now, is there a deadline before which I must take the test?
(4) Can anyone recommend preparation materials or a course?

37 CFR 1.21 is part of the PTO rules.  You can find them on the PTO web page in pdf format.

See http://www.uspto.gov/main/patents.htm

My understanding is that upon registration you are given a window for taking the exam.  I think studying over several months is sufficient.  Some people recommend about 300 hours of study.

I cannot recommend a study course.  There are some posts recommending one course or another on this web site, but I've always been suspicious concerning the origins of some of those posts.

Because the fees are subject to change it might be best to look up the current fees rather than chase down a possibly out of date copy of 37 CFR 1.21.

Here is a link to the current fees for enrollment
