I currently wrote a research paper on Business Method Patents (for which I got a good grade) while working towards my MS. The length is 42 pages, double-spaced. I am afraid I cannot use it as it is as a good writing sample while I apply for tech spec type positions at law firms. What are your thoughts on this? Also how would you recommend me cutting this down to a shorter size to make it more appropriate?
The paper is broken down into various sections like Abstract Summary, Introduction and History, Prominent Cases, Timeline, Requirements, Analysis and Synthesis, Recent Developments, International Perspectives, Conclusion and References
Also, would you think its appropriate to submit the first five pages (single-spaced) or so as a sample, while obviously the sample not being a coherent whole in itself? Your thoughts are really appreciated.

Why not?  If you believe that the report favorably shows your writing skills, length alone should not be a problem.  We all skim through reports, books, and articles - and get an overall impression of the work.

There are situations (for example some government positions) where a maximum length for is given for the writing sample. If the first five pages do not give a coherent picture I'd recommend doing a little editting.   I would *not* recommend condensing the paper down, but instead coming up with a coherent 5-10 page subset.

I wouldn't single-space.  I find double-spaced stuff (or even just 1.5-spaced) much easier to read.
