I have an interview coming up for a summer internship at a patent boutique firm and they want me to bring a writing sample to the interview. Should I give them a portion of a large brief, a short memo, or does it matter? Also, is there a standard length that they would be expecting?

I'm no authority on this, but unless you have something really relevant (e.g. a patent application or patent that you've written), I would limit it to 5 pages or so.  From what I've heard, this is pretty standard.

I can't speak for all firms, but when I interviewed they asked me for an unedited writing sample.  Something to consider...
