I have heard from a few vague sources that if you work for the USPTO for a certain amount of time... you can waive the patent bar. Is this true? Or perhaps it means one can only work as a patent agent inside the Office itself. Thanks

And then you get to take a 50-question exam instead.

They do not waive the patent bar anymore. They used to if you worked at the patent office before a certain date, for 4 years, and the director's approval. It is in the MPEP somewhere that they do not waive it anymore. If there are any doubts, I can find it and refer you to it.

You can still waive in. See 37 C.F.R. 11.7(d)+.
